Experimental Comparison of Paraffin and Palm Wax on Quality of Jasmine Aromatherapy Candles

This study aims to compare the physical and organoleptic characteristics of aromatherapy candles made from paraffin and palm wax, both infused with jasmine essential oil (Jasminum sambac). Using a laboratory experimental approach, two formulas were prepared: Formula 1 (paraffin) and Formula 2 (palm wax). Each formulation was mixed with cooking oil in a 1:1 ratio and supplemented with 25 mL of jasmine essential oil. Quality was assessed by 11 panelists through organoleptic tests (color, shape, texture, and aroma) and physical tests (melting point and burning time) in accordance with SNI 0386-1989-A/SII 0348-1980 standards. Results showed that palm wax-based candles had a higher melting point (57oC), longer burning time (±270 minutes), and were preferred by panelists, especially for aroma and texture, compared to paraffin wax candles (melting point 54oC, burning time ±180 minutes). In summary, palm wax is better suited for aromatherapy candles due to its superior physical properties, sensory qualities, and extended burn time.
